Shirley Dodson Walker, 83, of Warrenton passed away peacefully on January 29th.  Shirley was a kind, thoughtful, compassionate mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.  She was preceded in death by her husband (Louie), son (Larry), siblings (Mayo, Virginia Anne) and parents (James and Neda Dodson).  She leaves behind two sons, Dennis (Valree Clubb) of Warrenton, Stephen (Colette) of Richmond, and a nephew whom she considered a son, Donald Busick of Warrenton, two grandchildren (Evan and Sydney Walker) and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Shirley was born in Madison County and met her future husband at age 14.  After graduating from Culpeper High School, Shirley and Louie started building their lives together.  She began her career as a secretary and finished 20+ years later as Vice President of S.T. Research.  As accomplished as she was professionally, she was more accomplished as a mother, providing the love, support, wisdom, and discipline that raising four boys required.

In retirement, she and Louie had many adventures. Both had an interest in ceramics which led them to open Hideaway Crafts.  They ran the business for over 20 years and made many friends along the way.  They also enjoyed going to the horse track, owning some horses over the years. They also raised emus and established an emu business while promoting local farming in the area.

It was important to Shirley that you always “remember where you came from” and always give back.  She volunteered transporting cancer patients to/from their treatments and volunteered her organizational skills to help various cancer groups, the Ladies Auxiliary, and nursing homes.   She helped many people over the years while saying nothing and asking for little in return.  As compassionate as Shirley was, she was equally tough and resilient, surviving cancer twice.

A lifetime of interests included being an avid reader, often plowing through a book in a day, raising small exotic birds, and loving animals.  It was very common to see Shirley and Louie both with a pomeranian, or two.  She liked collecting and appreciated the little things.

She loved her grandchildren and would make sure they were adequately spoiled on birthdays and holidays.  She would often read with them and enjoyed having them sit beside her and show her their latest toys and achievements.  She loved a good laugh and a smile.  Many friends and family members have fond memories of their shared time with Shirley.
