Shirley Ann (Newland) Estes, aged 95, died Sept. 29, 2022 at her home
surrounded by family and caregivers.
Shirley Ann Newland was born on December 6, 1926 in Woodward, Iowa, as
the eldest daughter of the late Joseph Miles and Leota Mary (Mills)
Newland. She grew up in central Iowa and graduated from Boone High
School, class of 1944.
Shirley’s first job was with the U.S. Weather Bureau in Omaha,
Nebraska, but, as World War II ended, she was transferred to the
Washington, DC area to keep her job. In Arlington, Virginia, she met
and married the late Norman Edward Estes on August 7, 1946, and their
marriage lasted 59 years. In July 1949, the new family moved to Leon,
Virginia (Madison County), where Shirley spent the rest of her days.
In the late 1950’s Shirley earned a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN)
degree, and she worked for the Virginia Health Department offices in
Culpeper, Madison, and Greene counties.
She is predeceased by her husband Norman and her younger sister Rhoda
Rae (Newland) Nelson. She was predeceased by her best friend and
neighbor, Jessie Margaret (Dean) Branham with whom she spoke and/or
visited every day for 25 years!
Shirley is survived by her son William Edward Estes/his wife Lizanne
Marie (Palmer) Estes of Chapel Hill, NC; her daughter Mary Leota
(Estes) Haney/her husband Everett R. Haney, Jr. of Louisa, VA, her
grandson Troy Allyn Lamb/his wife Renee Faulconer Lamb of Louisa, VA.
Her surviving Iowa Newland relatives include niece Lisa Ann (Nelson)
Piklapp/her husband Kelly, Lisa’s daughter Jessica Rae Caruth/great
niece and Jessica’s daughters, great great nieces Mya Ann and Cadence
Rae Caruth, niece Christine Kay (Nelson) Sawyers/her husband Mark and
Christine’s daughters, great niece Erin Nicole (Nelson)/husband Ryan
MatthewHaverkamp, and great niece Brittany Michelle (Sawyers)/husband
Hunter Hilsabeck, and Brittany’s newly arrived son, great great
nephew, Jack Dean Hilsabeck.
Among her Newland relatives, she is survived by her last remaining
first cousin, Jane Josephine (Crum) Snyder/husband Franklin
(Gaithersburg, MD). Surviving second cousins in the Newland lineage
are the children of Jane and Franklin Snyder of the Washington, DC
area: Rebecca (Snyder) DeGussman/husband Richard, Deborah (Snyder)
Macpherson/husband Bruce, and Eric Snyder/wife Patricia. Deborah
Louise Stanberg (Burnside, Iowa) is a third cousin from the Newland
branch.
In the Mills branch of Iowa relatives, Shirley is survived by her
first cousin Ron Mills (Boone, Iowa) and second cousins Jean Ann
(Darling) Borgeson (Rippey, Iowa), Elayne (Darling) Bice (Johnston,
Iowa), Wayne Darling (Innermanzing, Austria, and Ann Lulu
Siglin (Mass.).
Shirley is also survived by local, in-law cousins in the Estes/Mundy
family: Earl Wallace Estes-III (Wolftown, VA), William and Barbara
Lynn (Estes) Zorn, Patricia Zorn, Jennifer (Zorn) (Cary, NC), Jane
Mundy (Stanardsville, VA), David and Susan Anne (Haney) Bagby
(Earlysville, VA), Doug Graves (Graves Mill, VA), and Harry William
Mundy (Sperryville, VA). She is also survived by her longtime friend
Maxine Packard (Webster CIty, Iowa), whose 85-year friendship was
maintained by phone, mail, and sometime visits and Peggy Jenkins
(Madison, Va.) a loyal friend for many years.
Her family wishes express their sincerest gratitude to the faithful,
dedicated, compassionate caregivers who met Shirley’s needs over her
last nine years - including cooking, feeding, bathing, driving, and
sitting. These wonderful people are Sheila Johnson, Mary Carter,
Lizzy Gochenour, Alice Mikulak, Debbie Runyon, Mary Askew, Sara
Hughes, Jane Mundy, Cheryl Dodson and Ida Dyer. Also, her friend and
hairdresser, Joyce Lindsay kept Shirley immaculately groomed for
decades. During Shirley’s last days, her Hospice of the Piedmont team
of case manager Katy Strain(RN), clinical social worker Lisa Stone,
and chaplain Rev. Denise Vogt was very helpful.
Throughout her life, Shirley found comfort, fellowship, and had
spiritual needs met with the Thoroughfare Bible Church. The family
appreciates the visits and camaraderie of all the members of the
congregation. Likewise, the family is thankful for Phil/Linda Hawkins
and Donnie/Sue Dodson who took Shirley to services and gatherings at
Thoroughfare Bible Church and to Nancy Knighting who kept Shirley in
her prayer chain emails.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Preddy Funeral
Home on Tuesday, Oct 4 from 6-8pm. Masks are optional, please do not attend if you are ill.
A funeral service will be held at the Preddy Funeral Home on
Wednesday, Oct 5 starting at 1pm, Pastor Danny Nicholson officiating.
After the services, all are invited to join a reception at 4pm at
Thoroughfare Bible Church (3823 Thoroughfare Road, Culpeper, VA 22701)
for remembrance of Shirley’s life. Shirley will be interred at
Stanardsville Cemetery at a private ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in
Shirley’s name be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, MESA in Madison
VA or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
