Nelson Conrad Smith, Sr went to be with the Lord on July 2, 2021 at the age of 89. He was born on September 11, 1931 to the late Everett Burruss Smith and Mattie Gertrude Badgett. He was one of 11 children.
Nelson is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Ruth Mae Smith; his three sons Nelson Conrad, Jr (Pat), Ronald Burruss (Janice), and Donald Phillip; One brother Kenneth Byrd (Betty), and sisters in law Marian, Lorene, Francis, and Bernice; Five grandchildren Katie, Mary Elise, Zach, Chris, and Mikala; Seven great-grandchildren Kelee, Leah, Colton, Emmett, Trevor, Sophie, and Addy; Many special nieces and nephews; in addition to many dear friends and neighbors, including Calvin and Joyce Bickley and Debbie Martin; and devoted caretakers for one and a half years, Deloris Johnson, Tonya Wilson, and Bernice Jackson.
Nelson served in the Korean War from 1952-1955 followed by 6 years in the Army Reserves. After his military service he worked as a meat cutter for 45 years at Safeway in Louisa and Miller’s Market in Mineral. He was a lifetime member of Louisa Christian Church where he served as a Deacon for many years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW.
Visitation will be held at Preddy’s Funeral Home in Gordonsville on July 6th from 6-8pm and the funeral on July 7th at 11am concluded by a graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery.
