Mary Jane Spiers                                                  December 14, 2024



Mary Jane Spiers, 89, of Baltimore, Maryland passed away on December 14, 2024 at Dogwood Village, Orange, Virginia.

Born 20 February 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the daughter of John Oliver Spiers and Pearl Estelle Cook. She was preceded in death by sister May Bertha Spiers and brother-in-law Frederick Patrick Schmeizl; brother Oliver Wesley (Jack) Spiers and sister-in-law Thelma Ruth Haught; sister Ruth Barbara Spiers and brother-in-law William John Gorge; sister-in-law Barbara Ann (Wisniewski) Spiers; brother-in-law Alan Sutton “Todd” Pritchard; and nephew Daniel Wesley John Spiers.

At the age of 17 she was chosen by the Maryland Civil Air Patrol Wing as Maryland’s sole attendant at a two-week encampment of CAP young female cadets at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. There she received training in weather work, map reading, first aid and navigation. This camp was the first time that females received the same training as male CAP cadets. She worked as a PBX telephone exchange operator in Baltimore. She later had a long career as a secretary and assistant to the president of the CW Jackson Construction firm, from which she retired. In her retirement Mary Jane traveled across the US and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Mary Jane is survived by son Richard Paul West and his wife Kathryn of Orange, VA; son David Keith Evers and his wife Terri Ann of Bumpass, VA; grandchildren Kaitlyn West, Kyle Evers and his wife Alley, Thomas Knowlton, Amanda Knowlton and her husband David; great grandson Thomas Hunter Knowlton; brother George Edward Spiers, sister Judith May (Spiers) Pritchard; nieces Linda (Spiers) Mochinal, Victoria (Spiers) Kuhn, Barbara (Gorge) Vinson, Kathryn (Spiers) Boerner, Jill (Pritchard) Blanchard; nephews William Gorge, Jr., George Spiers Jr., Michael Spiers, Alan Pritchard Jr.; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the staff at Dogwood Village of Orange for taking care of Mary Jane for the previous eight years.

A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 14193 James Madison Highway, Orange, VA 22960 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to a charity of their choosing.
