Alan James Shotwell, 78, of “Middle Earth”, Rapidan died on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at the Novant Health UVA Culpeper Hospital. Alan was born on July 28, 1943 in Washington, D. C. and was the son of the late James Henry Shotwell and Alice Taylor Shotwell Schaefer. Alan was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapidan, the Rapidan Volunteer Fire Company, the Viet Nam War Foundation and Museum, the James Madison Museum, and retired from the U. S. Navy as an optometrist.
Alan is survived by his wife Adele Goss Shotwell of Rapidan; two daughters Suzanne Elizabeth Shotwell Goodrich and husband Erik of Mililani, Hawaii, and Sara Kristin Shotwell Jaeger and husband Devin of Orange; two sons Franklin Minor Shotwell and wife Sharis Saketkhoo of Los Angeles, and Lee Stephen Shotwell and wife Akiko Kubo of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren Henry, James, Charlie, and William Shotwell, Grace Goodrich, Garland and Aurora Jaeger; step-mother Barbara Shotwell of Rio Rancho, NM; two brothers David Schaefer and wife Vanessa of Kent, England, and Jim Shotwell and wife Neal of Rio Rancho, NM; three sisters Anne Carroll and husband Brian of VT, Kristin Centofanti and husband Jorge of PuyLaurens, France, and Janet Shotwell Cooper of Rio Rancho, NM; aunt Lucy Grimm of Rapidan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial funeral service and reception will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapidan with the Rev. Philip Morgan officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 81, Rapidan, VA. 22733. The inurnment of the cremains will be held the day before, Friday, July 1, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. graveside at the Culpeper National Cemetery with military honors. Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is assisting the family.
