Vernon Rea Jones, age 94, passed away on January 17, 2025, surrounded by his wife, Margaret Ann, and his daughters, Susie, Debbie, and Vicky. He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on September 20, 1930, to George Randolph and Helen Rouse Green Jones.
He grew up in Orange County and graduated from Virginia Tech. Rea Jones wore many different hats and is recognized for the many different roles he served in over his lifetime. Many have described him as a gentle statesman and a man who was known to be patient, tolerant, fair and kind. He was a dairy farmer, a soldier in the US Army, a community leader, who served on Orange County Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission, a trustee and deacon for his beloved North Pamunkey Baptist Church, Head the Rapidan Service Authority, 35 years in National Guard and the Virginia Department of Military Affairs under four governors, retiring at the rank of Brigadier General, 8 years on Board of Orange/Madison Coop, 28 years as a Director of the Board of First Virginia Bank, a mentor to many, baseball coach, advocate, sports fan, husband, and our dearly loved dad, granddad, and great granddaddy. In every role, he lived it in service to others.
Rea Jones is survived by his spouse, Margaret Ann; three daughters, Susie Jones (Al), Debbie Arco (Jeff), Vicky Denslow (Ted); two stepdaughters, Lisa Courtney (Jerry), and Loretta Werling (Jimmy). His family includes ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Preddy Funeral Home, 250 W. Main Street, Orange, VA 22960. This will be followed by a graveside service with taps at North Pamunkey Baptist Church in Orange, VA. Visitation will be on Monday, January 20, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Preddy Funeral Home.

Rea’s life was a testimony of faith and devotion: to God, his family, his church, and his community.
