Thelma Catherine Woodward Moubray           April 15, 2023

Thelma Catherine Moubray, 91 of Madison, passed away from this life entering into eternity on April 15, 2023 at her childhood home place in Madison, Virginia to be with her dearly beloved Saviour Jesus Christ and to live in her new mansion in heaven. She came from one of the many Madison County families that were uprooted and displaced by what is now the Shenandoah National Park.  She was born on August 10, 1931 to the late Lloyd Albert Woodward and Flossie Hurt Woodward. She was also preceded in death by her dearly beloved husband, Kays Moubray, Jr.; beloved brothers, Floyd Woodward and wife Mae, Claude Woodward, Ross Woodward, William Woodward and wife Eva, Russell Woodward, Clemon Woodward and wife Gladys, and Wayman Woodward, beloved sons-in-law Lawrence Wood and Richard Johnson, and a host of beloved brothers-and sisters-in-law.

She retired from Blue Bell in Madison after 45 years of service, during which time she made numerous friends who have remained the kind of friend that Jesus commanded we be, the kind that sticks closer than a brother, up until the day of her death.

She is survived by her dearly beloved sister, Bessie Shifflette, beloved brothers Leroy Woodward and wife Carolyn, Reuben Woodward, beloved sisters-in-law Lucille Woodward, Alice Woodward, and Brenda Woodward,  dearly beloved daughters, JoAnn Riggs and husband Larry, Janet Jenkins and husband Warren, Linda Johnson, Rebecca Shifflett; dearly beloved son, David Moubray and wife Wendy; dearly beloved grandchildren, Laurie Moubray, Vicki Brent (Richard), Lawrence Wood, Jr., Caitlyn Rhodes (John), Michaela Johnson, Jamie Shifflett, Casey Nicely (Kevin), and Devon Geer (Trevor); dearly beloved great-grandchildren, Kayli Raynor, Cody Dyer, T.J. Dyer, Samantha Dyer, Aodhan Rhodes, Duncan Rhodes, Micah Linton, Brittany Shifflett, Kimberly Shifflett, Matthew Shifflett, Jeremy Shifflett, Tyler Shifflett, Kyle Shifflett, Ashby Geer, Garrett Geer, two great-great-grandchildren. and many beloved nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

Thelma touched their lives and left an imprint on the hearts of all who knew her. She loved well and she was well loved. She loved God, her family and her friends.  If she had any enemies, no one knew it.  All anyone saw in her beautiful blue eyes was love and faithfulness.  She loved visiting with family and friends, cooking and serving meals to anyone who graced the doors of her home, sitting on the front porch, being outside and gardening in her flowerbeds, listening to gospel music and going to gospel concerts, reading the Bible, talking about the Lord, going to church when she was able, working in puzzle books, bird-watching (and chasing away cats), and going for short and long rides. She loved talking about the good times she had had in her life. She loved to laugh and to put a smile on the face of others. She cherished, savored, and remembered every moment with family and friends.  She was never too busy to visit with or to talk with family and friends.  She never forgot a face or a name or an occasion.  She suffered many afflictions over the course of her life, but her faith remained strong in the Lord.  She had a mind stayed upon the Lord.  Her mind was sound up until she took her last breath.  She never lost her memory of anyone, their names, their faces, or anything, or their kind deeds.

Those who were special to her are indeed too numerous to mention, but an honorable mention to her dearly beloved daughter, JoAnn Riggs, who willingly and cheerfully gave of her own life, becoming her 24/7 caregiver after Thelma’s dearly beloved husband Kay’s died in September 2018.  A special thanks to the wonderful Hospice team who over the past four years have become like family to her, including Chaplain Jim Blackwell.  But above all, we give the Lord God Almighty who gives and takes away the praise, the honor, and the glory for giving her 91 years of life on earth, which she could not have had without Him.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison with Chaplain James Blackwell officiating. Interment will be in Culpeper National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
