Richard Oswald "Dickie" Blount                                             March 11, 2025

Richard Oswald "Dickie" Blount, 87, passed away on March 11, 2025, in Bradenton, Florida. Born on May 29, 1937, in Charlottesville, Virginia, he grew up in Orange County and graduated from Orange County High School in 1956.
Following high school, Dickie enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1956 to 1960. During his time in the Navy, he completed CT school in Imperial Beach, California, and Teletype school in Riverside, California. His service took him to USNSGA Bremerhaven, Germany, and Winter Harbor, Maine. After his military service, he embarked on a successful career with Xerox Corporation before dedicating much of his life to public service and community involvement.
A deeply committed civic leader, Dickie served as the Mayor of Gordonsville, Virginia, for 12 years. His dedication extended further as a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors for four years and the Gordonsville Town Council for another four years. He was also an active member of the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company for 13 years. However, one of his greatest passions was coaching youth baseball—he managed and coached Gordonsville Little League for an incredible 29 years, shaping the lives of countless young athletes.
Dickie was a devoted husband to his late wife, Patty H. Blount. He is survived by his daughters, Tina Garrett (Michael) and Lori Horner (Jerry); his beloved dog, Maggie; and his grandchildren: Lauren Tasso (Ian), Ian Garrett (Kinga), Austin Horner (Amber), and Nathan Horner (Rachel). He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Ayla and Aven Horner and Miller Tasso. His sister, Charlene Cowherd (James), as well as nieces and nephews including Anita Canody, also cherish his memory.
Beyond his professional and civic contributions, Dickie had a rich array of interests that brought him joy throughout his life. He was an avid supporter of collegiate sports—especially UVA basketball and football—and had a deep appreciation for horse racing. He enjoyed taking cruises with loved ones, fi shing at the lake, and dancing at the Legion in Lake Placid, Florida. Raised in the Methodist Church in Gordonsville, Virginia, faith remained an important part of his life.
Known for his wisdom and wit, Dickie’s legacy is one of unwavering commitment to family and community. His impact will be felt for generations through the lives he touched as a leader, mentor, coach, and friend.
A memorial service will be held in Gordonsville, Virginia at a later date.
