Nicholas G Tsongos

Nicholas G.Tsongos passed away peacefully at his home in Shenandoah Crossings, November 17, 2021, following a brief illness. He was surrounded by family and his beloved furbaby companion Zoey, as he passed into the arms of God
Nikos was born in Florina Greece, on June 29, 1928. He is preceded in death by his parents Dr.George Tsongos and Eleni, his sister Alexandra Nitso, and his beloved daughter Eleni Badger.
He is survived by his devoted wife Velma, two daughters Chryssie (Chris)Henwood, Georgette (Steve)Broy, stepson Todd Oliver (Danby) eight grandchildren Melina, Alexia, Christian, Austin, Cheyenne, Nikos, Lotus, and Scout. Two great grandsons Lincoln and Cash.
Nick lived a full life from birth til death. As a teenager he took part in the Greek National Resistance under General Zervas. Later he fought the communists earning a medal for his efforts.
After graduating from high school, he entered the Greek Military Academy. As a cadet he was sent to Randolph Field in TX to train as a pilot in the US Army Aircorp. Graduating from the academy as lieutenant, fighting the communist guerillas in 1949 -50, was rewarded by more military honors for his service in the Greek Armed Forces.
In 1958, he resigned from the Greek Military to apply to the School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University in Indiana, USA. He was accepted and consequently received his CE Bachelor's and Masters of Science in 1961. In 1964, he entered the civil service workforce as a Research Engineer and retired after 32 years of service in 1996.
Nikos was an avid sportsman. He ran four marine corp marathons. He was a
Fierce skier with the Washington, DC Ski Club. In 1998 at the age of 70, he and Velma climbed mythical Mt.Olympos, the highest mountain in Greece. Niko also loved to fly small recreational airplanes and enjoyed that hobby for 15 years
Nikos will be remembered for how he lived his passion for life, his deep supportive love of family, his devout faith and love of the Greek Orthodox faith, and his love of his homeland Greece.
Niko was a true gentleman, a loyal friend, a fierce believer of educational goals for his children and grandchildren. His earthly presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
While he greatly appreciated his US citizenship and all the opportunities it provided for many years, his heart never wavered in his love for Greece. His last wish was to return to the soil of Thessaloniki, Greece
