Joseph Edward Stephens, 91, of Culpeper, passed away on July 11, 2021 in Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 14, 1929 in Boone, N.C. to the late Eugene R. Stephens and Alice Lucille Lookabill Stephens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Catherine Ford Stephens; daughter, Jo Ann Cassidy; grandson, Coby Cassidy; and brother, John Stephens.
He was a manager for Culpeper Building Supply and retired as a sales representative from Culpeper Farmers Co-op. Joe was a member of the Culpeper Volunteer Fire Dept. for over 62 years and a member of the Culpeper Rescue Squad. Several years ago, the Culpeper Board of Supervisors awarded Joe the Culpeper Colonel Award. Joe was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Oak Park, Va. He was an Army veteran, was in the Korean War, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his daughter, Gloria Haynes and husband Tom of Martinsville, Va.; brothers, George Stephens of Pinson, Al., and Douglas Stephens and wife Carolyn of Culpeper; sisters, Jewell Haynes of Culpeper, Carrie Wilson and husband Paul of Boyton, Va., Nancy Stephens of Culpeper, and Margie Holipski of Bristow, Va.; a sister-in-law, Inge Stephens of Culpeper; grandchildren, Tommy Haynes and wife Cathy, Joe Haynes and wife April, Michelle Malone and husband Jimmy, and Douglas Cassidy; great-grandchildren, Devyn Haynes, Joseph Luke Haynes, Anna Haynes; aunt, Carrie Zowadski; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Friday, July 16, 2021 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison with interment in Culpeper National Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Light will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at the funeral home.
