James Michael Heflin January 20, 1959
James Michael Heflin better known as “Jimmy” born on January 20, 1959, from Stanardsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024, after a stubborn yet courageous battle with cancer.
Jimmy was known for his passion for college sports, especially UVA (GO Hoo’s), golf, and his gift for storytelling. Jimmy has been known to enjoy an iced cold Busch Light or two at his favorite local watering hole Riverside North. He had a remarkable ability to connect with those around him and was beloved for his immense heart and generosity.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Ward and Jamie Applegate; his nieces, Payton Waggy (aka the medical transporter) and Emily Heflin, his nephews Chad Heflin and Blake Heflin. His favorite sister, Debbie Heflin, his brothers, Steve Heflin and Jeff Heflin; and his father, Roy Heflin, his other brother James Snow. He had an armful of Grandchildren including Lily Madelyn, Grant, and identical twins grandsons which he could never tell apart and simply called them “twins,” and his other littlest loves Kylan and Keegan Waggy. Jimmy is now reunited with his beloved Mother Mary Heflin, sister-in-law Peggy Heflin, and nephew Dustin Heflin, who he cherished deeply and we know he is giving them the biggest hugs right now.
We would like to give a special thanks to Sentara Martha Jefferson’s Oncology team especially Dr. Boyer and Dr. Crimaldi. MJH palliative care (Deveryn Bailey, NP and Aurora Durkee-Warren, RN) thank you for your kindness, support, and compassion. Dr. Knight and Morgan, RN on Cornell I, thank you for giving Jimmy extra time with his family and your support.
His spirit and corny jokes will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. Think of him when you hear Eric Clapton especially Layla and let’s all try to finish a statement with the phrase “this, that, and the other.” A celebration of his life will be held at Riverside Lunch North- Forest Lakes on Friday, October 18th at 5pm.
