Herbert R. Rankin passed away on March 17, 2023, in Orange, VA. He was born on April 11, 1939, in Berkeley Springs, West VA. He is survived by his son Herbert R. Rankin Jr (Ronnie) and wife Amy L. Rankin, and 2 grandchildren MacKenzie L. Rankin, and Nolan S. Rankin. He is also survived by his sister Iris Jean Duckwall and husband Daniel Duckwall as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Jo Anne B. Rankin, father John F. Rankin, and mother Laura May Rankin as well as 3 brothers and 3 sisters. 

Herb was a great father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend. He touched so many in his family with his wisdom and humor. Throughout his teaching career, he impacted many students and fellow teachers with his gentle toughness and smile. He loved sports and spent many years coaching high school and middle school athletics. He was the first athletic director and was instrumental in getting a sports program started at Prospect Heights Middle School in Orange. Herb loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends. He also enjoyed attending his grandkids’ ball games and special events. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Maplewood Cemetery in Gordonsville. Pastor Tim Jarrell will officiate.
