Evelyn Luverne Powell Deane       December 20, 2022

 

   Evelyn Luverne Powell Deane, 74, of Stanardsville, Va, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. She was preceded in death by her father, Everett Luvern Powell; stepfather, Haywood Lee Powell, and her mother, Bessie Irene Herring Powell.

   She was born June 3, 1948, in Washington, DC to Everett Luvern and Bessie Irene Powell and graduated from William Monroe High School in 1966. She attended Bridgewater College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and earned a master’s degree from James Madison University.

   Evelyn was a cherished wife to Ray Deane, whom she married in 1973; devoted mother to her two boys, Christopher, and Jason; and a dedicated teacher to thousands of students who passed through her classroom doors in high schools and in community colleges in Virginia and North Carolina.

   She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on January 8, 2022, and 

fought this insidious disease over these months with vim and vigor. Nothing stopped her – she traveled throughout Virginia and North Carolina to spend time with friends and family, and to visit many places that brought her peace and comfort throughout her fight.

   The Deane family extends special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Hospice of the Piedmont, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, UVA University Hospital, and UNC REX Hospital for their loving care and dedication to providing her with care and comfort. Special thanks are extended to Evelyn’s team of lifelong girlfriends who helped her get to and from her appointments and accompanied her on her travels, provided food, emotional support, and many, many prayers.

   She is survived by her husband, Raymond C. Deane, Jr.; her two sons and their families: Christopher Haywood and Megan Deane of Virginia Beach, Va; Jason Clark and Karen Deane of Raleigh, NC; her two cherished granddaughters, Brooklynn and Teagan Deane of Raleigh, NC; and her sister and brother-in-law, Joani and Bill Graves of North Bethesda, MD.

   Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison, Va. with burial in Holly Memorial Gardens, Charlottesville, Va. The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the funeral home.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to be made in honor of Evelyn to Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, 114 4th Street, S.E., Charlottesville, Va. 22902, please note on your check, Madison/Greene Humane Society.
