Earl Vincent Ayers October 6, 2024
Earl Vincent Ayers, 77 of Madison, Va. passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at his home. He was born on June 11, 1947 to the late Vincent Eugene Ayers and Ethel Louise Mullen Ayers. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Richard E. Ayers and Roy L. Ayers.
Earl was drafted into the Army in 1966 for the Vietnam War and served two years at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Earl ran track for Troy High School and set several school records, notably in the 1-mile and 2-mile events. His records were not broken until roughly 50 years later. He was an avid runner for many years and volunteered his time as an assistant cross-country coach for Madison County High School. Earl competed in numerous marathons, half-marathons, I0K and 5K races. He also enjoyed hiking, frequently in the mountains of Madison County, Shenandoah National Park, and surrounding areas.
He is survived by his wife. Alma Lu Carpenter Ayers; daughter, Stephanie Denby Woodley and husband Chris; sons, Nathan V. Ayers and wife Gair, Matthew B. Ayers and wife Laura, and Jonathan E. Ayers; sister, Joyce Ayers Williams; brother, Martin L. Ayers; grandchildren, Skylar Rilee, Colin Woodley, Emily Ayers, Isabel Ayers, and Alexandra Ayers.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Madison United Methodist Church in Madison, Va. with Pastor Liz Petry officiating. The family will receive friends in the social hall after the service.
