Darryl Wayne Shifflett passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on October 14th, 2021 after a hard-fought battle with cancer at the age of 56. Darryl enjoyed community service in his younger years. He was a part of the Orange County Rescue Squad, as well as the Madison County Rescue Squad, in which he was a lifetime member, where he would meet his wife, Melanie. He enjoyed rappelling, hunting, and fishing. He would often be seen in the rivers fishing or driving around in his white Bronco.
Darryl married Melanie Gooding in August 1995, and they had their sons in April 1997 and his little girl in February 1998. Darryl enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved shooting, hunting, and fishing with his sons; and he loved doing anything softball related with his daughter. Darryl was a volunteer Parks and Rec coach for both softball and baseball when his kids were playing, he was a JV softball coach for Madison County High School, and he could be found at every one of his kids sporting events or activities. Even when he would work an hour and a half away from home, he would still find time to throw baseball with his boys or softball with his little girl. He was a true family man. He is missed deeply by his family.
Darryl dedicated his entire 33-year career to VDOT where he started as a blueprint drafter and worked his way up to being a financial programmer. He will be dearly missed by his friends and colleagues at VDOT.
Darryl is survived by his wife, Melanie Diane Gooding Shifflett, his sons Leslie Christopher Shifflett and Thomas Hamilton Shifflett, his daughter Megan Leigh Shifflett, by his Aunt and her husband Beverly and Joe Carpenter, and by his lifelong friend Alan Lacy.
The Shifflett family sends their thanks to the Mountain View Chapel community, the Oak Park Community, and their dear friends. Darryl’s memorial service will be held at Orange Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 20th, 2021 at 5PM.
