William Mason FitzGerald                                March 13, 2025

William Mason FitzGerald known to many as Billy, was a man of unwavering dedication, deep love for his family, and a lifelong commitment to service. Born on February 5th, 1956 in Washington, D.C. Billy grew up with strong values instilled by his parents, James Joseph FitzGerald and Edna Jean Lamp FitzGerald. These values shaped the man he became – a devoted husband, a proud father, and a fearless firefighter.
Billy spent his career with the D.C. Fire Department, where he not only fought fires but also mentored countless firefighters, passing down hard-earned wisdom with patience and humor. He was a leader, a protector, and the kind of man who ran towards danger when others ran away. His career wasn’t just a job; it was a calling, and he served with honor until the very end.
At home, Billy was a rock for his family. He shared a deep and enduring love with his wife, Lila Lea FitzGerald, building a life together filled with laughter, hard work, and unwavering support. As a father, he instilled strength and resilience in his sons, John Thomas FitzGerald and James Joseph FitzGerald, and carried the memory of his beloved daughter, Shelby Lea FitzGerald, in his heart every day.
Billy was also a proud grandfather to Logan, Luke, Eliza, Molly, Mason, and Maeve-each of whom carries a piece of his legacy. His brothers, James Michael FitzGerald and Joseph Bishop FitzGerald, and his sister, Susan Marie FitzGerald Boisen, knew him as a steadfast sibling, always ready with a story, helping hand, or a well-timed joke.
Those who knew Billy will remember his sharp wit, his strength in the face of adversity, and his unwavering loyalty. Whether at the firehouse, at home, or among friends, he had a way of making people feel safe, valued, and loved.
On March 13th, 2025, Billy passed away at the age of 69 at his home in Louisa, Virginia. Though he is no longer with us his impact remains-through the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
A memorial service will be held at one p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at his farm, 498 Riggs Rd, Louisa, Virginia, 23093.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation
