Sylvester Douglas, Sr., affectionally known as “Dollie”, 87, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on December 2, 2024 at the University of Virginia Hospital. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grand father, brother, uncle & friend.
Sylvester was born on April 27, 1937 to the late Quintus Douglas and Bessie Johnson Douglas of Cobham, VA. He was educated in the Albemarle County School System. He was drafted into the United States Army and served as a Armor Crew Man. During his years of military service, he was decorated as a marksman and sharp shooter. Following his years of active military service, he transferred to the United States Army Reserve. He was married to the former Covell Elizabeth Holliday for thirty years and from that union, three children were born.
He later joined Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville, VA. He retired from Potomac Electric Power Company in Washington, DC after approximately 20 years of service. He also served the Washington Metropolitan area as a dedicated taxicab driver way before there was Ubers and Lyfts.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents Quintus and Bessie Douglas, one son Sylvester “Lee” Douglas, Jr., three sisters Lucy Johnson & Ruth Brock of Philadelphia, PA, and Ethel Capers of Gordonsville, VA; twelve brothers Quintus Jr. of Philadelphia, PA, Harry of Patterson, NJ, Fred of Cobham, VA, John, David, Leroy and Earl of Gordonsville, VA and James, Thomas and Albert of Baltimore, MD and two siblings transitioned following childbirth.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Keith Blackwell Douglas of Danville, VA and Darryl Kevin Douglas of Washington, DC; four daughters Lillian Johnson of Washington, DC, Cindy Theresa Douglas of Silver Spring, MD, Shakira Kimona “Wendy” Nixon of Charlottesville, VA. and Yashica Kizzy (Terrance) Lucas of Louisa, VA; one daughter in law Alma (Sylvester) Douglas of Woodbridge, VA; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Also, two special friends Shirley Thompson and Betty Ann Nixon.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024, viewing from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm with a Celebration of Life starting at 1:00 pm at Preddy’s Funeral Home, 301 South Main Street, Gordonsville, VA. Reverend Charles Lewis, Officiating. Interment immediately following at Woodberry Cemetery, 753 Woodberry Cemetery Drive, Gordonsville, VA 22942.
There will be a Private Repast for Immediate Family Only at Union Baptist Church, 312 Cobb Street, Gordonsville, VA 22942.
