Paul Odell Scott of Ruckersville, Virginia passed away at the age of 88 on March 13th, at home, in the presence of his loving family.
On Groundhog Day of 1934, he was born to parents Bertha Davis Scott and William Bryce Scott in Blacksburg, Virginia. Most of his childhood was spent growing up in Norfolk, Va. alongside his five siblings. After meeting the love of his life, Carolyn June Scott, he enlisted in the US Army and lived overseas in Korea for two years. Following this stint, Paul and Carolyn married and he continued to serve the US Army faithfully for another 18 years. They shared a beautiful life raising four children and living in various parts of the middle east until moving back to the states in 1972. After retiring from the army, the Scott family moved to Virginia, where they have remained since 1975.
Paul went on to study data processing at Kansas State University and received his associate degree in applied science at Piedmont Virginia Community College, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He spent 20 years as a computer specialist for the US Army Foreign Science and Technology Center (now NGIC) before retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed tending to his property, creating projects for himself around the house, and being an altruistic pillar in the community. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his wife Carolyn, sing songs, tell stories, and eat tomatoes fresh off the vine.
No matter where he was, Paul never met a stranger. His laugh and smile were contagious, and his love for God was evident in every action and word he spoke throughout his life’s journey. Paul embodied the Christian values of love, forgiveness, humility, and acceptance. He was known by all for his unwavering kindness, selfless generosity, and wonderful sense of humor. We all cherish every moment spent with this beloved man.
Paul is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Carolyn Scott. His children Michael Scott and wife Kim, Daniel Scott and wife Joyce, Mary Elliott and husband Robert; daughter-in-law, Theresa Lynn Scott McCauley; his grandchildren Cristina, Dylan, Robert James II “Jimmy”, Jacob, Caryn, and Nathan; great-grandchildren Taylor, Jordan, and David Jr. His siblings Richard Scott, Lois Hill and Theodore Scott. He is preceded in death by his son Robert James “Jim” Scott, brothers Donald and Robert Scott, and his parents.
