James Lewis May, Jr. of Orange, Va. passed away on September 25, 2024, at 100 years old.
"Lewis" was born on March 30, 1924, to James Lewis May, Sr. and Rachael May in Rapidan, Va. He was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in Belgium and France, and was awarded two Battle Stars and a Meritorious award. Lewis loved baseball and played along the East Coast for the Army during the Korean War, including a game against Willie Mays. He was a member of the American Legion Post 156.
Lewis retired from the insurance business, after having been a manager at Virginia Metal Products for 32 years. VMP is where he met his wife of 70 years, Joan Elaine Spicer. Lewis was predeceased by brothers Archie, Roy, David, and Eugene May, and sisters Myrtle Mundy, Nellie Mouberry and Janice Miller. He is survived by his wife, Joan May, daughters Diane Hurst (Doug) and Denise Gipson (Tommy), two granddaughters, Shelley Morris (Brian), and Lexi Gipson Harris (Shane). Lewis has three great-grandchildren who were the light of his life, Spencer Morris, Clayton James Morris, and Blaire Elaine Harris. The family would like to express their appreciation to Tiffany Franzell and Chis Jernigan, very special friends at Dogwood Village.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.
