Harry Robert Johnston passed away peacefully at his home in Madison on October 29. 2022 at the age of 89. He was born on August 15, 1933 in Greensburg, Pa. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Shutt Johnston; his mother, Almira Johnston Stakley; a brother, Donald Johnston; and a sister, Marjorie Soule.
Harry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rhoda McMahan Johnston; daughters, Melinda Johnson, Melanie Oliver (Stephen), Rhonda Dodson (Kenny), Michelle Milbourne Farmer (Mark); son, Donny Johnston (Vonda). He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and two step-granddaughters and sixteen great-grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter.
Harry was born, raised, and ran the family dairy farm in Pa. He moved with his family to Virginia in 1962 and continued dairy farming for many years. After retiring from the daily farm, he worked for Ownby Auction for several years. He had many other jobs until his final job at Somerset Seed and Sod. His passion in life was horseback riding. He was president and member of the “Blue Ridge Riders”.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Oak Park, Va. The family will receive friends one hour before the service, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon at the church.
