Elizabeth Frayser Kipps                                             November 4, 2024

Elizabeth Frayser Kipps, 86, died November 4, 2024. She is survived by her sons Kennedy Kipps (Caroline) of Charlottesville, and William B. Kipps (Trisha) of Midlothian; grandchildren, Tobias, Linda, Hazel and Paul Kipps; and nephews and nieces, John, Barbara and David Kipps, and Dana Moody. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Paul Henry Kipps; parents, Stuart Kennedy Frayser and Adell Burkman Frayser; and sister, Pearl F. Moody.

Betty grew up in Richmond, graduated from Varina High School and Mary Washington College, and earned her master’s degree from James Madison University. In 1960, she married Paul and moved to his family farm in Madison County. His career as a professor led them to Harrisonburg, where they lived 25 years and raised their family.

An abiding faith in the power of God led Betty to a life of service. In the Lutheran church, she was president of the congregation at Muhlenberg in Harrisonburg and served on its state-wide governing board. She was on the boards of several inter-faith organizations, advocated for mental health and environmental conservation, became a Chaplain Extern at U.Va. Hospital, and was active in three garden clubs. Back in Madison in retirement, she served Mt. Nebo Lutheran Church, started a Little Free Library, and delighted in being a grandmother.

Betty’s funeral service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 12th, at Mt. Nebo Lutheran Church, 3980 Jacks Shop Rd., Rochelle, Va. 22738. A lunch reception will follow in the parish house. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Betty’s honor may be made to the Madison County Library or Martha Jefferson House in Charlottesville, her last residence.
