Caroll Cullen Johnson, Jr.                August 18, 2023

Carroll Cullen Johnson, Jr., 97 years old, of Orange County, Virginia passed away on August 18, 2023. He was born on March 25, 1926, in Memphis, TN.     His parents were Dr. Carroll Cullen Johnson and Corinne Noell Johnson. He graduated from Pentecost- Garrison School in Memphis and from The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, where he was president of the Senior Class.  He was graduated from the University of Virginia and in 1952 from the University of Virginia School of Law.

 

Carroll was a decorated officer in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division and served during the occupation of Japan.

 

He began his law practice in 1952 in Memphis and continued his practice there for fifty-eight years. Carroll was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and the Memphis Lawyers Journal Club.

 

Upon his retirement Carroll and his wife Margaret moved to Green Level Farm in Orange County, Virginia where they renovated a family farmhouse originally built in 1763. Because his mother died when he was 3, Carroll had spent many summers with relatives in Orange. He always wanted to retire to the farm and spent the last 12 years of his life there.

 

Carroll is survived by his wife Margaret and his children, Elizabeth Bogard (Hal),  of Louisville, KY, Nancy Foster (Eddie) of Memphis, TN,  Carroll Johnson, III (Glori) of Memphis, TN, Corinne Frick (Paul) of Harleysville, PA; stepsons Stan Gibson,  Steve Gibson ( Mary Ann), and Tim Gibson (Christy ), all of Memphis, TN; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his son, Michael.

 

Carroll had a broad range of friends, including friends in Memphis, such as his long time friend, John Paul Jones, and many new friends in Virginia. The family is grateful for the loving care he received from the staff of The Culpeper Skilled Nursing Center where he resided the last 8 months of his life. 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on August 22, 2023, at St Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange, VA where he was a member.
