Anne Meade Faulconer                                                          August 11, 2024

Anne Meade Faulconer, 87, of Orange, Virginia passed away on August 11, 2024. She was born October 25, 1936 in Madison, Virginia to Francis P. Smith, III and Anne Buckner “Nancy” Smith. She is survived by her daughters Carol H. Faulconer and Martha F. Gray (G.W.); her grandchildren, Julius Andrew Coppa, III, Catherine M. Gray (Ryan), and Mary B. Miller (James); great-grandchildren William Harold Dunn and Theodore Charles Dunn; and brother Thomas P. Smith.

She was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband of 64 years, Grover Harold Faulconer; sister, Frances F. Lea; and son-in-law, Michael A. Strong.

After high school, Anne Meade studied at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. She then worked as a teacher in Madison, before joining the Orange Library as a librarian. During her time with the library, she led a weekly story hour, introducing countless children to the magic of books. To ensure everyone had equal access to their local library, Anne Meade also delivered books throughout Orange County in the bookmobile.

Anne Meade was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Over 63 years of faithful service to her church, she was elected to the Vestry eight times, hosted dozens of elegant coffee hours, and was a member of the Episcopal Church Women where she volunteered many hours to service projects in the community.

With a skillful green thumb, Anne Meade kept her flower gardens pristine. She was the longest standing member of the Rapid Ann Garden Club with 52 years of loyal membership. She enjoyed sharing her love of floral arranging for all kinds of events and celebrations. She delighted in hosting gatherings with family, friends, neighbors, and strangers alike. While she loved serving a lavish meal on an immaculately set table, Anne Meade was equally fulfilled inviting you in for an impromptu cup of coffee and a chat.

One of Anne Meade’s greatest joys in life was travel. She loved to explore new places with Harold and taste the local cuisine. Though they traveled the world together, some of the most precious memories were made at their cottage in Nags Head where they spent summers with family.

Anne Meade encouraged everyone to keep learning new things and have new experiences– and she lived by example. A donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Orange in her honor would be a fitting tribute.

A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange on Monday, August 19, 2024 at 10:00am.
