Alexander Terrell Baskerville of Orange, Virginia departed this life on Sunday, May 14, 2023. He was born on October 11, 1934, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the third child of Channing Feild Baskerville, Sr., and Virginia John Terrell Baskerville. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Channing Feild Baskerville, Jr.

 

Terrell graduated from Sunnyside-McKenney High School in 1952. He was junior class president, student body president, and valedictorian his senior year. He played baseball and basketball for the school.

 

Terrell entered Virginia Polytechnic Institute as a cadet in the fall of 1952 and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering and proudly wore his class ring nearly every day thereafter. While at college, he was a member of the German Club, American Society of Military Engineers, and American Society of Agricultural Engineers of which he served as chapter president his senior year. He earned his army commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. He graduated from the Officers Basic Engineering Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia in 1957. After serving his six months active-duty obligation, he returned to McKenney, Virginia to assist in the management of the family dairy farm.

 

In 1959, he married the former Elaine Chaffin of Richlands, Virginia.

 

In 1964 Terrell and his family moved to Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he attended and graduated from the Officers Fixed Wing Aviation Course with a military instrument pilot license and an FAA commercial instrument pilot license. He retired from the Army Reserves, the rank of Major (0-4) in 1983.

 

In 1965, he was appointed the first county administrator of Dinwiddie County, Virginia, and served until February 1970 when he accepted the same position in Botetourt County, Virginia. In 1974 he became the first county administrator of Orange County, Virginia, and continued in that position until September 1993. He then served two years as county administrator of Fluvanna County, Virginia to finish out his retirement.

 

Terrell was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange, Virginia, and served on the vestry as treasurer.

 

Terrell enjoyed watching Virginia Tech football and New York Yankees baseball. He liked to read and play golf. He treasured his annual family beach vacations to the Outer Banks, North Carolina, and loved to spend time with family at his cabin in McKenney, Virginia.

 

Terrell is survived by his loving wife, Elaine, of sixty-three years; daughters Virginia Dulin and husband Chris of Locust Grove, Virginia; Elizabeth Yowell and husband Jonathan of Orange, Virginia; son Timothy Baskerville and wife, Tonya of Wake Forest, North Carolina. Grandchildren Christopher Dulin, David Dulin, Zachary Yowell, and wife Carson, Abigail Yowell, Claire Yowell, Meade Baskerville, and Sarah Baskerville; great-grandchildren Lacie Yowell and Brooke Yowell; sisters King Baskerville Talley of McKenney, Virginia and Frances Baskerville Tucker of Manassas, Virginia.

 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 2:00 pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange, Virginia. An interment will be held with military honors at Culpeper National Cemetery, Culpeper, Virginia at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 119 Caroline Street Orange, Virginia 22960. Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is assisting the family.
