Matthew “Mack” Randolph Davis was born on July 25, 1932 in Charlottesville, Virginia to Thomas and Zadie (Winkey) Davis. Mack went home to be with the Lord on October 31, 2020. He peacefully departed this Earth at home, surrounded by loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 65 years, Cynthia, his son Gregory (Greg), and Greg's wife, Pearl. He was also preceded in death by a number of siblings, including 3 brothers, Wilber, Wilson, and Alvin Davis, and 6 sisters, Charlotte Anthony, Marjorie Carter, Marion Locker, Genevieve Beasley, Lucy Beasley, and Mary Magdalene Davis.

Mack graduated from the Albemarle Training School in 1949. He retired from Sperry Marine after 26 years. While Mack did well in school and led a successful career, there’s no doubt he stood tallest on the baseball mound. As young player in Central Virginia’s Negro Leagues, Mack quickly made a name for himself as an ace pitcher. In the 25 plus years he played for the Barboursville Giants, opposing hitters shuddered at the thought of his fast ball and drop pitch. When the time came to hang up his cleats, Mack passed his glove and love for the game on to his sons, who carried on his legacy in softball leagues around the state. On any summer or fall day, he could be found watching a game on TV in his favorite recliner. He cheered loudly from Barboursville when his Washington Nationals won the World Series in 2019.

He was a sweet spirit that lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, spending time with family and friends, conversing about his early years spent in Newark, New Jersey and serving the Lord. Mack was a faithful and longtime member of the Blue Run Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon, Trustee, and member of both the Senior Choir and the Male Chorus until his passing. He was also a lifetime member of the NAACP and active in the Orange County Chapter.

He leaves to cherish his memory, one sister, Doris L. Brock. One sister-in-law, Bertha Rucker (Walter) and a brother-in-law, Herman Smith (Marcia). Three sons: Matthew “Rick” (Darlene), Keith, and Stanley (Sharon); eight grandchildren: Aaron, Marques, Olacynth (BJ), Sarajanee, Cadessa, Quinn, Stanley II, and Sydney; seven great-grandchildren: Aaron, Amya, Jayden, Kyra, Dominic, Kaylee, Beau, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mack was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a friend to all who knew him.
